George Britton-Stray

He enlisted as a boy in 1919 and joined the 2nd Battalion DLI as a Bugler at Batum in South Russia. He then served 17 years with 2 DLI in India and Sudan, rising to Bugle Major, before returning home and joining 8 DLI at Gilesgate as a Permanent Staff Instructor.
He became Regimental Sergeant Major of 8 DLI in 1939 and was promoted to Quartermaster "in the field" in 1940. He served with 8 DLI throughout WW2 and was awarded the MBE in 1945. He finally retired as Captain & Quartermaster in 1946 and became a social worker in Surrey.
George Britton-Stray died in 1978 at Woking.
